Laser Hair Removal: Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you want to ask about laser hair removal — answered simply, honestly and on a scientific basis.
We have gathered what we are asked most often, organised in sections so you can find what you are looking for quickly. If your question is not here, ask us directly.
General
Is the result of laser hair removal permanent?
Follicles that are destroyed do not produce hair again — we are talking about permanent reduction of the order of 80–90%+ after a full cycle. Hormonal changes can activate new follicles over the years, which is why some people choose 1–2 maintenance sessions a year.
What ages is it done at?
It depends on your hormonal cycle: you can start from adolescence, once it has stabilised. There is no upper age limit, as long as the hair still holds colour.
Does it work on every hair colour?
No — it needs melanin. Dark brown and black hair responds excellently; blonde, red, grey and white hair responds minimally or not at all. At the assessment we will tell you honestly what to expect.
Do men and women follow the same programme?
The technology is the same, the plan is not: male hair is thicker and hormonally "persistent", so it often needs 1–2 sessions more and different settings.
The procedure
How long does a session take?
From 5 minutes for small areas such as the upper lip up to 45 for the largest ones. Most areas are finished in 15–30 minutes; full body, which combines several areas in one visit, takes 60–90.
How often do the sessions happen?
Every 4–6 weeks for face/underarms/bikini and 6–8 weeks for legs/back — we follow the natural hair cycle of each area.
How do I prepare?
Shave the area 24 hours beforehand and no root hair removal (wax/tweezers/threading) for 4 weeks. Those two are enough — staying out of the sun is not needed.
What will I feel?
Momentary "stings" with a sensation of heat, softened by the cooling of the handpiece. Sensitive areas (bikini, upper lip) are more noticeable but last only moments.
Safety
Is laser safe? What does the research say?
Yes. It is a safe medical procedure when it is performed by specialist staff with certified equipment — systematic reviews (Cochrane 2006) and long-term studies (Dermatologic Surgery 2001, 2013) document this.
Are there side effects?
The usual ones are mild and temporary: redness and a feeling of warm skin for a few hours. More rarely, temporary pigment changes — almost always linked to wrong settings, which is why we insist on a proper medical history.
Can it cause skin cancer?
No — the light of a hair removal laser is non-ionising radiation: it does not alter DNA the way ultraviolet light or X-rays do. It acts purely thermally, locally and superficially.
What are the contraindications?
Pregnancy (as a precaution), active skin conditions or infections in the area, and photosensitising medication (for example isotretinoin — which requires a waiting period).
Cost & Programme
How much does laser hair removal cost?
It depends on the area, the hair density and the number of sessions. At the free assessment you get an exact written quote — and options per session or as a package, whichever suits you.
Is there a better time of year to start?
No. With our system, staying in the sun is not a contraindication, so the programme starts and runs just as well in any month of the year.
What happens if I miss a session?
Your progress is not "reset" — we simply rebook as soon as possible, so the hair growth cycle is not lost.
Why choose BFI?
Scientific supervision, a certified new-generation Alexandrite, a personalised plan and honest expectations — if something will not work for you, we will tell you before you pay, not after.
How long does each area take?
How we assess whether it suits you
Before any programme there is a free 20-minute assessment: Fitzpatrick skin type, hair characteristics, medical history and medication. If something will not work for you — light hair, recent isotretinoin, an active skin condition — we will tell you clearly and suggest alternatives, instead of selling you sessions.
What the studies say
- Eremia S. et al., Dermatologic Surgery (2001): a prospective study with a 755nm Alexandrite laser recorded a mean hair reduction of ~89% at 18 months after a series of sessions on the legs, bikini and underarms.
See the publication on PubMed ↗ - Haedersdal M. & Gøtzsche P., Copenhagen University Hospital — Cochrane Review (2006): the systematic review concluded that the Alexandrite and the diode laser have the strongest scientific evidence of effectiveness, with a mean short-term reduction of ~50% at 6 months.
See the review in the Cochrane Library ↗ - Gan S.D. & Graber E.M., Boston University School of Medicine — Dermatologic Surgery (2013): a review of safety and effectiveness: high satisfaction rates, with side effects that are as a rule mild and transient when the treatment is carried out by trained staff.
See the publication on PubMed ↗ - Davoudi S.M. et al., Wellman Center, Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard — Archives of Dermatology (2008): a randomised comparison of Alexandrite and Nd:YAG on the legs, with a significant reduction (~78–84%) maintained 18 months after the sessions.
See the publication on PubMed ↗ - Lanigan S.W., Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (2003): a record of the frequency of side effects in a large series of laser hair removal cases — it confirms low rates of mostly transient reactions in experienced hands.
