Onychomycosis with laser — BFI

Onychomycosis — Treatment with Laser

An Nd:YAG beam that passes through the nail and reaches the nail bed, where the fungus grows. The nail does not clear on the same day — it clears as it grows.

How it works

The laser emits a beam of light that passes through the nail and reaches its bed, where the fungus grows.

The energy of the beam is converted into heat and selectively targets the micro-organisms, without burning the nail or the skin around it. The wavelength is Nd:YAG at 1064nm, which reaches that depth. The system we use does not exist anywhere else in Thessaly.

The nail clears as it grows

This is the point that disappoints most people and we would rather you knew it from the start: the nail does not change its appearance after the session.

The part that has already been affected does not come back. What changes is the new nail growing out from the root, and it takes months to reach the tip. Patience is part of the method, not a side effect of it.

The session

  • ✓Duration — 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how many nails we work on.
  • ✓Sensation — a momentary heat or a light prickling. No anaesthetic is needed.
  • ✓Number of sessions — usually 3 to 10, depending on the extent of the infection.
  • ✓Interval — about 2 days between sessions.
  • ✓Local application — nothing is given by mouth and you go straight back to your day.

Diagnosis first

Not every change in a nail is a fungus. Thickening, yellowing or deformity can have another cause, and in that case the laser offers nothing.

That is why a diagnosis is needed before we start. In advanced cases the right approach goes through working with a dermatologist. If we see that, we will tell you instead of booking you sessions.

What we do not promise you

The limits of the method

We do not give you a success rate. The response depends on how advanced the infection is, on how many nails it involves and on your own daily routine.

The fungus can come back if the conditions that favoured it stay the same. Shoes, moisture and foot hygiene count as much as the sessions.

If your doctor has already recommended treatment, the laser does not cancel it. Tell us what you are taking and since when, so that we can plan accordingly.

Questions & Answers

What most people ask, answered briefly and clearly.

When will I see a clear nail?

As it grows. The affected part does not come back, so the clear nail shows gradually, from the root towards the tip. On the feet that takes months.

Does it hurt?

You feel a momentary heat or a light prickling during the pulses. No anaesthetic is needed and there is no recovery afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually 3 to 10, with an interval of about 2 days. We work out the exact number after we have examined your nails, not over the phone.

Is it certain that it will clear?

No, and we will not tell you otherwise. There are cases that respond very well and others that need to be combined with treatment from a dermatologist.

Do I need a diagnosis before I come?

Yes. We need to know that this is a fungus and not something else. If you do not have a diagnosis, we will tell you how to get one before we start.

Should I come with nail polish on?

No. Come with clean nails, with no polish, gel or artificial nail, so that the beam passes through freely.
